Founded in 1874, the New South Wales' Art Gallery hosts the national and international modern and contemporary art exhibitions.  Its light-filled exhibit space is expansive, offering stunning views of Sydney and the harbor. Walking through the diverse rooms, it is possible to admire the collection of colonial art and the European but also Asian and Aboriginal art of the XIX century. The museum boosts an extensive 30000+ works in its permanent collection. Only 5% of our collection is on display at the Gallery at any one time, either in our permanent galleries or temporary exhibitions. There are various reasons: they don’t have enough space to display everything simultaneously, they loan works to other museums for exhibitions and some works are undergoing conservation treatment or put into storage to preserve them. A few rooms in the Gallery are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, usually organised around a particular theme. There are several exhibitions at the Gallery that are held regularly. These include the annual competition exhibitions for the Archibald, Wynne, Sulman and Dobell prizes along with ARTEXPRESS, which presents a selection of works from Year 12 visual arts students for the NSW Higher School Certificate. The art collection is truly international and included Asian and occidental collection. With the inclusion of the Kaldor Collection, the Gallery now holds Australia’s most comprehensive representation of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present day. The Gallery's main international themes are also the minimalism and conceptual art, the Nouveau Réalisme and the Art Povera. Among the international artists, there is the Swiss Udo Rondinone, defined as “multimedia romantic”. He creates paintings, drawings, photos, sculpture, videos and installations that express powerful emotional status. His poetic works are often accompanied with music and lighting effects. They seem almost like settings from cinema, creating atmospheres intoxicating and soaked with melancholy and desire.Rondinone plays at the borders of fiction and reality. He creates environments clearly artificial with false walls, empty windows, architetural illusions, oneiric environments and repetitive musical phrase that accompany the audience, suggesting that nothing seems what it looks like.
